Media Players

Media Players - music and video (in chronological order...)

AeroPlayer

AeroPlayer was written by a Palm employee when Palm didn't think it was possible to write an mp3 player. Today it has the best sound quality of any mp3 player, and it runs most efficiently in the background (meaning you notice less slowing down of your palm). Plays mp3 and Vorbis. Can play AAC with additional (not free) plugin.

Recently added the ability to display album art.

  • Integrates with Hobbyist Software apps and other 3rd party apps

Price: $14.95

Pocket Tunes

Pocket Tunes wins on the interface - selecting songs and building playlists is really easy with the ability to select by album, artist, genre, etc

Plays Mp3, Vorbis and Wav

  • Integrates with Hobbyist Software apps and other 3rd party apps

Price: $14.95

Pocket Tunes - Deluxe

Pocket Tunes plus online music store support, WMA playback, crossfade, gapless playback, ShoutCast streaming audio, and bookmark capability.

  • Integrates with Hobbyist Software apps and other 3rd party apps

Price: $34.95

MMPlayer

This Media player plays video. Plays DivX, H263, mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 video plus Ogg, mp3 and MIDI audio.

Seems to cause somewhat more crashes than the others - but video playback is pretty cool.

  • Integrates with Hobbyist Software apps and other 3rd party apps

Price: $17.95

Real Player

Real Player is included in the Treo650 and downloadable for other Palm devices. The interface isn't pretty, but it works. The biggest weakness is that it doesn't integrate with other applications.

  • Doesn't integrate with 3rd party apps

Price: free

Get it at RealCom

Busker

Busker is the new kid on the block (also known as GoMp3). It has possibly the nicest interface and was the first to introduce album art display. It licences the mp3 playing technology from MMPlayer.

  • Doesn't integrate with 3rd party apps (yet?)

Price: $19.95

TCMP

TCMP is a free open source player for sound and video.

It's limited in that you can't have background play and it doesn't integrate with other apps - but it is powerful and free. Probably the best video app out there at the moment.

  • Doesn't integrate with 3rd party apps (yet?)

Core Player

Core Player

This is the commercial offspring of TCMP. It looks better, but I don't know what has changed 'under the hood'

  • Doesn't integrate with 3rd party apps (yet?)

Hobbyist Mp3 Player

If you have a Treo after the Treo 650, or a Centro, then you can use the very simple mp3 player which is built into Hobbyist Software apps. It plays most mp3s, and can be selected in the mp3 player menu. Not a fully functional player - but great for alarms, mp3 ringtones, or for launching the occasional mp3 from Initiate.
